Patient Arrives at Emergency Room

A "Sight for Life" Ocular reconstruction success story...

Staff Contributor, May, 2013

This month's "Sight For Life News" story comes to us from San Antonio, Texas.

Upon being notified by Baptist Health System of a horrific sight threatening accident, Dr. Sponsel and the Baptist Health System's "Saving Sight" team must respond quickly.

The team had to quickly converge upon the operating room at San Antonio's Baptist Health System Hospital to meet a patient who's left eye had been crushed in a household accident.  Complicating matters, the patient, Mr. Juan Ramos, had undergone Cornea Transplant surgery by Dr. Sponsel some 10 years prior to this accident.

Time was of the essence, if there was to be any chance at all for Mr. Ramos' sight in his left eye to be saved, his eye must be operated upon immediately.  Mr. Ramos' family rushed him to the operating room where a pre-warned, waiting and prep-ed "Saving Sight" team was ready for action and prepared for the worst.

The team worked feverishly from the time Mr. Ramos arrived in the operating room until 3:00 am the next morning in this amazingly successful Saving Sight episode... (see video)

Mr. Juan Ramos (left) and Dr. Sponsel are both amazed and pleased with the outcome; and, each praised the dedication of the Baptist Health System's "Saving Sight" Team.
